Crook Hill & Ladybower Reservoir Walk

Final day in the Peak district would be spent ascending Crook Hill followed by a stroll along the eastern bank of Ladybower Reservoir. After a good breakfast and lunch prepared a 30 minute drive north took us to the car park at Fairholmes off the A57 Snake Pass road from Sheffield to Glossop.
To park in the National trust car park cost £5.00 for the estimated 4-5 hours to cover the 7.5 miles.

We left the Fairholmes car park going back to the road we arrived on and crossed over when we saw a gate and sign pointing to Lockerbrook Farm on the opposite side of the road. Following the path through the woods, ascending to reach a track near the farm. Turning left we headed along a track past the Lockerbrook Farm to reach a junction, here we took a small path on the left to stay on the edge of the woods and bend around to a gate.

Passing through the gate we carried on walking by the edge of the woods to reach two stiles. Going over both stiles we made our way over Bridge-end Pasture then sloped down to come to another gate and a signpost.

Following the path leading to the Snake Road into a field containing the twin tops of Crook Hill. Shortly after entering the field we left the path and headed left towards the eastern slope of the first top then we climbed up the grassy bank once past the rocks on the north side.

The views from the hill were magnificent, despite a height of only 382m. From the first top we dropped down the grassy bank and climbed onto the second hill. The 374m summit is not as clearly defined as the first hill but the views are equally good.

Leaving Crook Hill we descended eastwards to join the main path which leads through a field by-passing Crookhill Farm to join a road. We turned left and followed the road down to the Fairholmes Road where we turned right to meet the A57.

Crossing the viaduct then turning left we were onto a track which follows the banks of the reservoir for approximately 2 miles sloping left down through the woods back to the car park.

Just before returning to the camper in the car park we explored the Derwent dam scene of the dambusters trials.
