Castle Combe

Fantastic day out on the Cotswolds. We travelled on the A420 out of Bristol towards Chippenham parking in a lay-by opposite St. John’s church at Ford. From the lay-by we descended steps leading to the White Hart public house. At the bottom of these steps facing the pub we turned right and walked for 10 minutes until finding a stile on the left hand side of the lane. Once over the stile the lead was off Luna and we walked across the first field following the brook on our left hand side. We then crossed a bridge over the brook and into another field. Having completed this walk before we were aware that there can be cows in the fields, today the lead was off as no livestock were in the fields. We carried on following the well worn track going over another bridge until we came across Luna’s favourite spot a sandy/shingle area where she had a safe swim which today with the sunshine was most welcome. Going over another bridge we found the redundant watermill of the Rag Mill Slaughterhouse. After taking a few photographs we retraced our steps allowing Luna to have another dip in the brook.

From the lay-by we drove on the A420 towards Chippenham until we reached the sign for Castle Combe on the left. We followed this road until we reached the outskirts of Castle Combe and parked in the free car park about a half mile up the hill on the Northern side of the village. After a downhill walk of 10 minutes we were in the centre of the village and went into the White Hart for lunch. Later we wandered through the main street to the Southern side and found a stream where Luna had another cool dip. Castle Combe is a historic Cotswold village full of beautiful houses where I took several photographs capturing the cotswold stone buildings with their stone slate roofs
