Lost Gardens of Heligan

Spent a fantastic few days in the Roseland Peninsula Cornwall. We stayed in a beautiful cottage in Veryan. After an early start on Friday morning we arrived, unpacked and were on a coastal walk before midday. Walking out of Veryan we headed south to Carne beach. The beach is sandy and dog friendly and links with Pendower Beach heading west. Tide times need to be noted as at high tide walking around the beaches is not possible as you become cut off by the sea. The tide was starting to come in so we had to walk part way over rocks spending time to explore the many rock pools. We were forced to take a pathway up to the coastal path due to the advancing tide. A total of around 4 miles we found The Hidden Hut at Porthcurnick. Perched up above the beach a welcome stopping place to enjoy a freshly made soup, pasty and refreshing drink. Once refreshed we retraced our tracks back to the cottage, taking in the beautiful scenery.
The next day after a hearty breakfast we met our friends who live in Cornwall at the Lost Gardens of Heligan. After paying for entry and receiving maps a tour began to explore these wonderful gardens. I managed to take a few photographs during the day, but the main reason for this visit to Cornwall was to spend time with our friends.

After lunch and a few hours walking around these beautiful and interesting gardens we set off to the coast and spent a while at Portholland beach a secluded sandy, dog friendly old fishing cove with around a dozen victorian houses. We walked on the beach aiming west and found another beach which it was explained was West Portholland and we were parked in front of East Portholland beach. At low tide these beaches become one long stretch of sand.

Our next destination was Mevagissey where we parked at the main car park on the road leading into the harbour. We then had a leisurely walk through the narrow streets enjoying the many galleries and gift shops on route to the harbour providing a safe haven for the many fishing boats. After a walk along the Harbour wall we enjoyed a meal at one of the many restaurants dotted around the harbour. We arranged to meet up the next day and made our short journey back to Veryan.

The following day after packing up we headed to the north coast to meet up at Perranporth beach. The beach is huge and although there were a lot of people enjoying the relatively good weather due to the size of the beach it felt empty. We had lunch and then walked down to the waters edge to watch the surfers and take in the fresh air off the ocean. After saying our goodbyes we headed off home late afternoon promising to return in the summer.
